Sources: Basemap - National Atlas of the United States. Trout Distribution - Hermann, K.A. (ed.) 1996. The Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Data Base CD ROM Set. Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere Program. Norris, TN. The State of NC posts some excellent trout fishing stream maps, which show many wild trout streams, and also indicate how they are regulated. You can find them here: http://www.wildlife.state.nc.us/pg03_Fishing/pg3a.htm The maps on this website were generated using the Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Database (SAAGIS). Click here for the tutorial (1.7 MB) on how to download and set up your own ArcExplorer GIS database for these streams. If you decide to stick with the PDF maps I've created, the 8 digit numbers on the map provide the standard HUC coding for basins, which is also used in the NHD database. This makes it easy to generate high quality road maps using the NHD Geodatabase web-viewer, simply by zooming directly to the basin code (See Tools - Web GIS). Just remember to add a leading 0 to the basin value on the map when selecting a basin on the NHD system.
