New Hampshire Wild Trout Streams |

New Hampshire is renowned for its upland brook trout streams. However, very little information is available about them: the state Fish and Game department lists only 16 wild trout streams out of the hundreds that exist. The map below illustrates most of what little specific information is available. The yellow and green areas indicate good to outstanding brook-trout habitat. Red indicates compromised populations (possibly because of marginal trout habitat, or habitat that favors brown or rainbow trout). Blue indicates qualitative evidence that brook trout live in the area, but an absence of quantitative data. Most of NH is coded blue. However, there's no reason to believe that NH should be any worse than VT or ME at corresponding elevations and distance from the ocean. Click here to download a detailed stream map for Northern NH. Unfortunately, it's big: right now it's 16MB. I'll see if I can make it smaller without compromising quality. But for now, you'll need to be patient while it downloads. Be sure to view it at the right magnification - 100-125%, depending on your screen).
