Regions 3 and 4 cover most of "downstate" NY, including the famous Catskill watersheds. There is a great deal of wild trout water in these regions, though much of it has degraded to the point where it holds brown and rainbow trout more than brookies. It's fair to say that most headwater streams in the Catskills hold wild trout. Many, but not all streams are on private land. Unfortunately, there's a long tradition of carefully posting trout streams in the Catskills, so it's always tough to find accessible water. Please observe no trespassing restrictions, and check out topo maps to find streams on state lands. The principal holding areas for brook trout include the Beaverkill/Willowemoc and upper Neversink watersheds that feed the Delaware. These have been carefully studied, and are receiving a great deal of attention from TU and others to improve trout habitat.
