West Virginia wild trout are found exclusively in the Appalachian Highlands (shown in pink).  Click on the map to bring up a detailed stream map of the area (PDF - 3.4MB)

Sources:   Basemap - National Atlas of the United States.  Trout Distribution - Hermann, K.A. (ed.) 1996. The Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Data Base CD ROM Set. Southern Appalachian Man and the Biosphere Program. Norris, TN.

This detailed stream map was generated using the Southern Appalachian Assessment GIS Database (SAAGIS).  Click here for a tutorial (1.7 MB) on how to download and set up your own ArcExplorer GIS database for these streams.

If you decide to stick with the PDF maps I've created, the 8 digit numbers on the map provide the standard HUC coding for basins, which is also used in the NHD database.  This makes it easy to generate high quality road maps using the NHD Geodatabase web-viewer, simply by zooming directly to the basin code (See Tools - Web GIS).  Just remember to add a leading 0 to the basin value on the map when selecting a basin on the NHD system.
