In 2006, we created a series of maps around the NHSP "Living Waters" dataset.  Today, we can distribute the same dataset in Google Earth, so you can view it yourself at any resolution, and combine it with other information.

NHESP Core Habitat and Google Earth

"Core Habitat" waterbodies are shown in blue, the supporting watersheds are shown as magenta.  Most streams found flowing through the NHSP watersheds (magenta areas), or upstream of them, should be pretty good trout habitat, if they're cold water streams.  You can use information downloadable from the "MA Water Quality" page to confirm which streams are cold water.  Generally speaking every stream in the far west will be cold water; as you head east it will be a mix.

If you don't want to use Google Earth, we've kept the maps we plotted in 2006 available.  But truly, Google Earth is the way to go.

PLEASE NOTE: A NUMBER OF WILD TROUT STREAMS IN THE CONNECTICUT  RIVER BASIN ARE BEING STOCKED WITH ATLANTIC SALMON FINGERLINGS.  SALMON PARR RESEMBLE BROWN TROUT.  WE HOPE YOU'RE PRACTICING CATCH AND RELEASE ANYWAY, BUT BY LAW YOU MUST RELEASE ALL SALMON PARR.  LEARN THE DIFFERENCE HERE.
