Maine Wild Trout Streams - Interactive Map
Maine is a massive state with thousands of small brook trout streams. Outside of the urban/suburban sprawl in the southwestern part of the state, if you cross a small stream in Maine, there's a pretty good chance it will hold at least some brookies.

The interactive map contains icons for 55 of the 57 wild trout streams first listed in 2006 on the Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Department's (IFWD) web site (I couldn't locate the other two.) It's not completely clear why the IFWD chose these streams over the thousands of others they might have selected, though we expect that they believe the fish populations and density will support a rewarding sports fishing experience. Which isn't to say you can't have fun on that little stream up the road from your friend's cottage.
The interactive map was created on Google Maps using the KMZ file for ME WTS streams you can download from the resources menu on the sidebar. A tutorial explaining how to do this is in the GIS Tools section, in the article on Google Maps. In addition, you can also think about creating your own Google Earth "workstation" using these data and the EBTJV watershed data.
You can zoom the embedded map, but you might want to click on the link to enlarge the map to the full size of your browser. From the 2006 version of this site, we've kept the original "List page", which provides a list of the 55 streams, and text links to jpg files of USGS topo maps. Click on the "ME WTS - List" link in the ME Resources menu in the sidebar.
