Cutthroat Trout

WildTroutStreams.com offers the most detailed distribution information publicly available for Cutthroat Trout. We already cover most cutthroat species, and more is coming.  Our web pages provide important background information. But if you just want the data, click on the Downloads tab. The "Native Trout" sub-tab will provide access to dozens of files of distribution data and other information about cutthroats as well as other native species.

Cutthroats are found across a broad range of the western United States.  Historically, they emerged as soon as the uplands on the eastern slope of the Rockies cooled water sufficiently.

Today, "cutts" survive principally in headwaters and other isolated pockets of the western US.  In lower streams, a combination of habitat degradation and competition with exotic species has greatly reduced their populations.

We are in the process of adding a significant amount of information about locating cutts.  Check back with us every week or so, and you should find additional information available.  More detail is available via the "Cutt Variants" menu in the sidebar.
