North West Steelhead

KMZs and other files showing the distribution of NW Steelhead are available from the download system.
Steelhead are officially listed as as a threatened species across parts of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Special licensing requirements and regulations apply, and some streams may be closed to fishing. Check the state Fish and Game website before going out.

Steelhead run across virtually the entire Pacific NW.  The summer run, pictured below, takes steelhead deep into the interior, across the eastern borders of Washington and Oregon, and a large swath of Idaho right up to the continental divide at the Montana border.  The winter run is more localized to coast rivers along virtually the entire Washington/Oregon coast.

These images were created using a vector dataset distributed by StreamNet.org, compiled from a multitude of sources which are credited on the individual records and displayed in Google Earth.

NW_steelhead_winter runStream lines are color coded for fish utilization.  Dark blue lines are used for migration only.  Bright turquoise lines are used for spawning & rearing.  Dull turquoise are used for migration and rearing (but not spawning).

These data were converted to KMZ files by WildTroutStreams.com, and are available for free download via the "Steelhead" page of the download system.  Click on the ">Natives Download" link in the sidebar and click on the "Steelhead" icon.

The KMZ contains the complete, original StreamNet Attribute table.  You can click on a stream segment and see the data record for an individual segment displayed in a balloon, as shown in the bottom photo.
