Tennessee Wild Trout Streams

Tennessee is the last frontier for WildTroutStreams.com.  While it's always been part of the EBTJV dataset, for a long time we felt we didn't have enough data to justify adding coverage.  Then some helpful folks at TDEC and TWRA made data available (apologizing that TN doesn't have a well organized GIS clearinghouse), allowing us to provide some valuable new data.

HQ and Trout waters in Eastern TN Highlands

The image above shows a "work in progress", a dataset prepared by the Division of Water Pollution Control.  The green lines are Tennessee's "HQ" or Exceptional Value streams.  They are not necessarily cold water, though in the eastern highlands, the vast majority of them are.  The purple lines are the streams within the dataset which are labelled, "natural reproduction trout stream".  These streams aren't necessarily all of the wild trout streams in TN... they are, however, the ones where trout have been surveyed.   Trout are likely to be found in streams within the same watersheds, and in similar watershed to the ones that are marked.

If you follow the >>>TN Downloads link in the resource menu, you'll be able to download the EBTJV dataset, and the four KMZs displayed in this image (packaged in a single zip file).  The green HQ streams are provided in 3 separate KMZs (North, Central, South) to allow you to turn some off if necessary.  This is a pretty large dataset, and if yoru computer is older or memory-constrained, you might have trouble keeping the entire dataset on.  The fourth dataset ("NRTS") shows the natural reproduction trout streams.

In the download section you'll also find a set of "Trout Reports" produced annually by Region IV of the Wildlife Resources Commission.  While these are sometimes heavy going, they provide a treasure-trove of qualitative information about these same streams.
