Virginia Trout Streams by Species

Recently, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) joined the more enlightened states in publishing good quality GIS information on wild trout.  Trout streams that support natural trout reproduction have descriptive data which describes the species which can be found there.  Surprisingly, most of the streams support brook trout (green).  Rainbow (pink) are the next most common and, along with Brown trout (brown), extend the range a bit lower into the foothills.  Some streams support two or three species.

On the "VA Resources" menu, you can find links to download this information to set up your own workstation.  The "VA Quickstart Tutorial" explains how, designed for folks who know how to use Google Earth.  Persons who are not experienced Google Earth users may want to download and work through a detailed tutorial on setting up Google Earth which can be found on any of the GIS Tools pages.
