Vermont WTS - Interactive

The State of Vermont has officially designated 6 river segments as "wild trout streams" as part of a 5 year trial.  (Click on the icons in the map below to bring up a topographic map of each designated segment; click here for a list.)  In addition, several larger Vermont streams support wild trout populations and are presently managed without stocking including the Batten Kill, Castleton River from Ira to Fairhaven, Furnace Brook, and the Poultney River.

The interactive map contains icons for 6 wild trout streams first listed in 2006 by Vermont Fish & Wildlife  It's not completely clear why the VFW chose these streams over the hundreds of others they might have selected, though we expect that they believe the fish populations and density will support a rewarding sports fishing experience.  Which isn't to say you can't have fun on that little stream up the road from your friend's ski condo.

The interactive map was created on Google Maps using the KMZ file for VT WTS streams you can download from the resources menu on the sidebar.  A tutorial explaining how to do this is in the GIS Tools section, in the article on Google Maps.  In addition, you can also think about creating your own Google Earth "workstation" using these data and the EBTJV watershed data.

You can zoom the embedded map, but you might want to click on the link to enlarge the map to the full size of your browser.  From the 2006 version of this site, we've kept the original "List page", which provides a list of the 6 streams, and text links to jpg files of USGS topo maps.  Click on the "VT WTS - List" link in the ME Resources menu in the sidebar.
